8/12/11 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Friday

Today I had one of THE best days of summer.  I went to the zoo with my parents and son.  I will remember this day forever.  Watching the joy on my parents' faces while they showed my son the animals was indescribable.  It was a gorgeous day, the weather wasn't too hot, and everyone was great spirits.  We walked for 4 hours looking at all the animals!

I burned a lot of calories and now that I know my body I immediately recognized the signs of low blood sugar.  Walking for such a long time really dwindled the fuel I had and I became shaky. All I had for lunch was a chicken salad kit and carrots (my typical lunch), however, I knew my body needed more.  Honestly it is dangerous to not "refuel" when you get shaky like that.  Usually you'll gain weight anyway from letting your body go into starvation mode.  We stopped and I got a bowl of fruit and a bag of crackers.   I still had my afternoon fruit later in the day as well.  My consultant said when I am burning a lot of calories it's important to add in an extra fruit, a low-fat cheese stick, or a few whole grain crackers.  I followed her advice which helped hold me over until dinnertime.  Make sure you read the signs your body is giving you and listen to them.  It's never a good thing to get shaky or dizzy!
