I read the funniest newspaper article while waiting for my flight several weeks ago. The report cited the confusion of consumers over flip-flopping medical headlines on health/nutrition issues. Darla Carter of the Courier0-Journal believed that the tide of beliefs about issues such as the benefits of eating fish, whole eggs, vitamin D and on and on changes according to the yearly season.
Consumer’s who try to live healthy by eating well, follow advice they read only to see during the next season that they might have mercury poisoning because they increased their omega-3 intake and raised their cholesterol by eating whole eggs vs. egg whites. You need a score card!
What’s the solution? What I recommend is 1) the practice of moderation. Don’t go to the extreme in any direction. 2) work in conjunction with your internist, family doctor, or trusted physician (mine is my obgyn), 3) investigate from different sources when you read new studies and read them with a watchful eye.
There is no panacea. Live life fully and make healthy choices! Laugh, love and smell the roses (I got carried away with the greeting card phrases there. Sorry).
